May 2018

Looking to the future ...

In a bid to secure an increase in participation with local juniors, Mark & Jim visited two local primary schools with our Mini Squash Experience.

It was a long day on 14 May with 80 pupils attending at The Park CP School, Llay in the morning and a further 27 pupils from Penygelli CP School, Coedpoeth in the afternoon (followed by our regular coaching session at the Club that evening !).

We didn't know whether to laugh or cry when one eight year old asked if we were twins - we were both wearing the same Club shirts with shorts !

Leaders Award

A number of our Juniors were invited to take part in a WSRB Leaders Award hosted by the Club on Saturday, 7 April.

The Leaders Award is a great introduction for young people into activity leadership, it's designed to provide them with knowledge on how to organise and lead small games and activities which may be used as a part of a club's sports sessions.
The Award also helped participants to reflect on leadership styles and techniques, as well setting clear, achievable goals for self-development.

From the Club's perspective, we hope it may also lead some to consider taking a UKCC Level 1 Coaching Award.

The day course was run on behalf of Wales Squash & Racketball by their High Performance Coach, Andrew Evans.

Josh is making good progress

There's no substitute for play if you want to develop and improve - this is certainly true for Josh Davies, who continues to make an impact playing in our Senior Teams.
See the Teams Page for details.

Top Competition for juniors

Best wishes from the Squash Club to four of our juniors who will be involved in the highest level of competition during January.

First up, Jamie Silvester is taking part in the Boys Under 13s event at the British Junior Open 2018 in Birmingham (3 - 7 January). Unfortunately, Jamie's first match was against a seeded Egyptian player.

Soon after that will be the Welsh Junior Closed 2018 at the Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff (19 - 21 January).
For this event, Jamie will be joined by his brother, Will Silvester, together with Josh and Lewis Davies.

These events provide tremendous challenge and experience to our young players and we wish them well.
