2024 - the Club's 17th Year

Our important initiative to encourage more Women and Girls' participation in squash continued throughout 2024 and has helped us welcome new members; our weekly juniors coaching programme and the Squash Wales Academy Squad at the Club also continues to do well but we still need to attract more young people; the internal uplift and maintenance of the Club remains a high priority.

Some highlights from 2024 ...

It may just help save a life ... !

On 19 December 2023, the Squash Club hosted a Defibrillator Training / Refresh Session and Members were encouraged to come along, to help better understand what to do in the case of an emergency.

Our thanks to Rob Evans for his knowledge and guidance through this vitally important training.

Work completed on courts refurbishment

Work to refurbish our courts was completed by Melior Sports, on 21 December 2023.

The work included the repair and painting of walls and a light sanding of court floors, over two days.
During the week after Christmas, the floors will require regular brushing, vacuuming and mopping, to ensure they are playable - volunteers were welcomed.

In the final A Grade match, Josh beat fellow Club member, Jamie Silvester by 3-0. This was a great tournament for both players; their game continues to advance to a higher level.

In the B Grade Final match another Club player, Darren Lee, who finished as Runner-up. Well done to all our players.

Club's First Division status - CONFIRMED

We've received confirmation that the Squash Club's NWCSL First Division status is secure into the 2024-25 Season.

With our First Team at the bottom end of Division One last season, there was some doubt whether or not we would stay in the top tier or be relegated !

For a Club like ours to maintain a place in this elite level Squash League is superb and huge thanks to all involved, in particular our First Team sponsor, Dave Cadwallader.

Josh is our new Club Champion

Congratulations to Josh Davies, our 2024 Club Champion.

The Final was played on 3 August, against Rob Evans - Josh winning the match in three games: 11/8, 11/9, 11/5.

In the Play-off match for Third Place, Will Silvester came through strong to beat Darren Lee 3-0.

Alasdair achieves Level 2 Coaching Award

Congratulations to Club member, Alasdair Blundell who, in August, successfully completed the England Squash Coach Award (Level 2) at the Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham.

This Award is an important one for the Club, enhancing our experience and qualification, particularly for the coaching work with juniors.

Congratulations to Jon Davies

Over the weekend 5-6 October Jonathan Davies competed in the British Racketball Open Mens Over 50s event at the Hallamshire Club in Sheffield.

He did really well to progress, but lost out in a tight Semi Final match.

Birthday wishes to Brian

In October 2024, we congratulated Brian Wynn, an active member of the Club who celebrated his 80th Birthday.

Brian, who was also a former Badmington player and Coach, continues to enjoy playing squash twice a week and "loves it".

From everyone at the Squash Club, we hope he had a great birthday and that he keeps on playing the game he loves ...

Happy Birthday Brian

Cheshire Champion

Well done again to Jonathan Davies, on taking the 2024 Cheshire Open - Over 45s Title over the weekend 20 October at the Bowden Squash Club.

Congratulations our Cheshire Champion

A Commonwealth disappointment ...

Some good news and some disappointing news on 22 October - Commonwealth Sport confirmed that Glasgow are to host the 2026 Games.

The Glasgow Games are scheduled from 23rd July until 2nd August 2026 but will feature a much reduced 10-sport programme.
Sadly, this means it will not involve several established Commonwealth sports, including Squash, particularly disappointing as we try to grow the sport, and that all of the Glasgow squash facilities are already in place.

Congratulations to Tez

Following on from her Semi Final place at the Canadian Womens Open 2024 held in Toronto in October, Tesni Murphy went even better and won the Women's Monte Carlo Classic 2024 at the Monaco Squash Club - this was a superb win for Tez who, in the Final, beat the No1 seed, Sarah-Jane Perry by 3-0 - Huge Congratulations to Tez who plays for our First Team in the NWCSL.

Monaco Champion

Snow causes postponments.

Snow overnight on 18 November, with the ensuing roads disruption and a Police warning for severe weather later across the North West, it caused the Club to postpone the Squash Wales Academy session and our First Team match against Warrington.

Racketball ... JD's your man.

Congratulations to Jonathan Davies who has achieved at yet another big Racketball Competition.

Jon finished as Runner-up in the Liverpool Racketball Open, Over 45s Event held over the weekend 24-25 November. He was disappointed not to win this event, admitting he did have a great chance to win the Final match !

She's born to play ... !

At the F&F on 30 November, we welcomed a star of the future, no doubt, in Harper Clark, daughter of Tom & Hannah.

At 23 months old, Harper is already finding her way around the squash court - she's definately one to watch !

Our future star !

Christmas comes early with our Fast & Furious 2024

Our annual Fast & Furious pre-Christmas Competition took place on 30 November.

With thanks to those members who took part for their support, it was a simple format, designed just as a bit of fun, bringing together an excellent group of mixed ability players into good competition, even some family rivalry !

Brian's 80s tour ...

Continuing his 80th celebrations, the Club's Senior Member, Brian Wynn got on court with the Club's youngest member, 13 years old Anna Fogerty on 6th December - it was great to see these two enjoying a hit together.

Youth & Experience on court

Helping out with a court share !

In December, we were happy to support and help out Brookside Squash Club, based at Weston Rhyn, Near Oswestry.
Following recent severe storms and flooding there was a devastating impact on the Club, causing damage to the squash court area - it's a difficult time for the Club who also have a Team in the NWCSL.

They hope to get the building back in operation as soon as possible, but meanwhile, all "home" matches will be played at Brymbo under a shared arrangement.

New boiler fitted

With support from a Sport Wales Energy Saving Grant, the Club has had a new Central Heating boiler fitted on 13 December.

The recent couple of months had been a trial for members, with no heating at a coldest time of the year.

A new boiler is fitted.

2024 Welsh Champions

Over the weekend 14-16 December, Squash Wales hosted the Karakal Welsh Senior Closed 2024 .

In their respective Finals, Joel Makin beat Emyr Evans, while in the Ladies Final event Tesni Murphy beat Ellie Breach. In the E event, young Academy North player, Leon Lauder, won his Final.

Our 2024 Welsh Champions

Top player at the Club

On 17 December, we were pleased to welcome World Ranked No.6 Joel Makin, playing for Warrington against our First Team.

It was a mark of the man that having played his match he also took time on court with an Academy junior player.

World Number 6, Joel Makin

Teams Sponsorship

We were most fortunate to have much needed sponsorship from Cadwallader Ltd; our grateful thanks to Dave Cadwallader.

Tesni joins the First Team for second half of Season

Some brilliant news over the New Year as we welcome back to the Club, Tesni Murphy (nee Evans).

Recently married, Tesni has a current World Ranking at 25 (highest WR is 9) and she will be a valuable addition to our First Team as we go into the second half of the 2023-24 season; Tesni plays her first match for the Club on 9th January, against Alderley Edge 1 (Away).

Top signing for the Club

NE Wales Team - Fixtures Spring 2024

Great night at the Club !

On 6th February 2024, the Club was packed with a gallery enthralled at the very highest level of squash being played with our guests, a very strong Warrington Firsts.

It was a first home match for Tesni Murphy who battled hard at third seed but to go down 3-1.

Man of the Match was Josh Davies playing at No 4. Josh played superbly to take his match into a fifth set with Ollie Hudson, and going on to win.

The two top matches featured, at 1, Wales Team mates Owain Taylor (WR 104) against Joel Makin (WR 9) and, at 2, Rhys Evans (WR 218) v. Jonah Bryant (WR 140) - both tremendous matches, they went to form at 3-0.

Steve Jenks played at No 5, he had a tough time against another strong Warrington opponent, going down 3-0.
An excellent night at the Squash Club.

Our Man of the Match

Number one seeds

Another tough night at the Club !

We hosted Grove Park in Division One on 27 February - a must-win match in many ways !

Young Rhys Evans stepped up to the No1 spot as Owain Taylor was unavailable; Rhys faced his Welsh Team mate and training partner, Emyr Evans - but it was a solid performance from Emyr who came through 3-0.

Our Man of the Match this evening was Jon Davies playing at No 4; he came through a five set match to win - match score 1-4 to Grove Park.

Man of the Match - JD

Welsh pride !

One match to go for Firsts

Following a superb 3-2 away win at The Northern Club [Manchester] on 19 March, there was just one match remaining this season, at the Club, on 26 March. Our visitors were Bowden; it was yet another must-win match in what's been a tough season, the result could decide whether we stay in Division 1.

This is squash of the very highest standard, right here at Brymbo.

Where we stand with one match to go !

Fantastic win in our final match

Our First Team had another superb win in the final match of the 2023-24 Season, at home to Bowden 1 on 26 March.

A stunning 3-0 win at five by John Ashton started us off well and it just kept coming with victories from Will Silvester (at 4), Rhys Evans (at 2) and our Number 1, Owain Taylor.

In the last match of the evening, we had a very gutsy five set game involving Josh Davies (at 4); he gave it everything and took it all the way with a 14-11 victory to make it a 5-0 match to our First Team.

Despite this superb showing, there was uncertainty as to whether we had retained our First Division status - down to a decision from NWCSL. Whether or not our First Team will be offered the opportunity to remain in Division 1 is still awaited, however, there will be many considerations for the Club to ponder if and when that may occur !

Our thanks to all of the players and markers for their time and effort throughout the Season and, in particular, a very special thank you to our First Team sponsor this year - Dave Cadwallader.

Our players are commended for their outstanding contributions to the high quality of squash both home and away.

Everything to the cause !

A season completed - how we finished.

Congratulations to our North Wales Team on finishing the Spring Season as Champions.

Below are the final placings for all of our Teams at the end of the 2023-24 Season.

First Team to fight again in NWCSL Division 1

In the 2024-25 Season, Wrexham Brymbo Squash Club will again be one of the Teams playing at the highest level, the North West Counties Squash League, Division 1.

Our Second Team remain in Division 2 and our Third Team will again play in Division 3.

The season starts up again in September and we're most grateful to Dave Cadwallader, who has agreed to sponsor our First Team for a second season.

Great start to the new season

Our new look First Team started the season with an excellent 3-2 win against Bowden on 24 September.

We welcomed Stan Sykes and Adam El Shazly, playing at No 2 and 3 respectively; their first matches for the Club.

Josh Davies was first up with a superb 3-0 victory at No 5. Our Wrexham supporters then had to move between two courts for some tremendous and gutsy play from our No1 Owain Taylor winning a tough 3-0 on the Glass Back and Tesni Murphy on the other court, who came back from a match ball down to win 3-2.

Our two new team members came up against some in-form players and lost their matches; but there will be more to come from them this season.

Josh provides the winning start

A winning Team !

It's a tight mid-table clash

On 5th November we welcomed our friends from Neston Squash Club, in what proved to be an extremely close encounter, that could have gone either way.

We took an early lead in the match through Josh Davies and Tesni Murphy. Both were convincing 3-0 winners, while Will Silvester lost out 3-1 and Adam El Shazley, playing at No1 with an injury, lost 3-0.

Our Man of the Match had to be Jonathan Davies who got to match ball in the fifth but was just edged out; Neston win the match 3-2.

It was great night of squash and competitive to the end.

Youth (Jamie) v Experience (Tez)

Winding up our visitors !

Match we all wanted ... postponed

We had to take advice from the NWCSL League Secretary and Warrington SC, but with a Police severe weather warning across the North West, our eagerly awaited home match with top of the table Warrington, was postponed,

The heavy snow, traffic disruption and the threat of icy condition later would affect players who would be travelling from as far as Nottingham and Birmingham. Safety was, therefore, at the heart of this action.

Two top Welsh and World Ranked players were due to play - Tesni Murphy and Joel Makin - we hoped they may be available for the re-scheduled match, which was agreed for Tuesday, 17 December.

It's tough at the top

We welcomed back George Thomas a friend of the Club on 10 December and straight into the First Team for a crucial match against Alderley Edge.

George is back home in North Wales for Christmas from New Zealand, where he works as a Squash Coach to 14 regional clubs near Christchurch.

Due to injury and others not available, we were struggling for this important match, which we lost out 5-0. Credit to all players for a great match, especially to Stan Sykes and Will Silvester both going close, losing out at 3-2.

George Thomas

North East Wales CHAMPIONS

Huge congratulations to all those who've played in our North East Wales Team, as they win the Winter 2024 Season

Our Team completed their Winter season on 17 December with an emphatic 4-1 win over the Midtown Team, to win the League by 10 points - a fantastic result for the Club and everyone involved.

Rearranged match with League leaders

Our much anticipated match with the mighty Warrington was played at the Club on 17 December with some stars of the game in action.

Despite having our own problems through injury and non-availability, we had a compelling, quality match. We saw two current Welsh Champions in Tesni Murphy (World Ranking 21) and Joel Makin (World Ranking 6) plus the ever improving 19 year old, Jonah Bryant (World Ranking 49).

We lost the match 5-0 but there was huge effort from all of our Team - George Thomas was at No.1 against Joel Makin (0-3), Tesni Murphy played Jonah Bryant (0-3), Will Silvester was up against Lewis Doughty (0-3), Rob Evans played Josh Owen (1-3) and John Ashton faced Ollie Hudson (0-3).

This was our final match of the first half of the season; thanks to the Warrington players for the spirit in which this was played.

George & Joel

Tez & Jonah

First half completed ...

The first half of the 2024-25 Season was completed at the Club on 17 December, with some good news and some bad.

Congratulations to our North East Wales Team on finishing with a win over Midtown to take the League title (see below), a depleted but determined First Team however lost to the NWCSL leaders, Warrington (again, see below).
We start off again in early January with the second half of season when the NE Wales Team are home to Buckley Elfed on 6 January, swiftly followed by a NWCSL First Team home match to Bowdon on 7th.
Come along and support our Teams.

Anna Fogarty, Jessica Handley and Erin Lauder took part in the Girls in Motion event, organised by England Squash, dedicated to junior girl squash players (aged 5 to 17) of all abilities across the North West.

Over 50 girls attended and they took part in a range of court based activities, including the chance to play on the all-glass court. A great time was had by all.

Re-start for Academy Squad [North]

Thanks to Squash Wales, the 2023-24 season has been extended and our regular Tuesday Squash Wales Academy sessions will now continue thorough to the Schools Summer Holidays on 16 July.

Jamie's in charge !

July 2024

Jamie going Dutch in July

The season continued for young Jamie Silvester who headed to Amsterdam, taking part in the 2024 Dutch Junior Open, from 4th to 7th July.

Jamie played in the Boys Under 19s catergory, where he faced some stiff competition.

Jamie still has a number of personal goals to achieve as a junior, in particular his sights were set on taking part this year in the Welsh (Open & Closed), the British (Open & Closed), together with possibly the French, Irish and Scottish Open Championships.

The Club wished Jamie the very best of luck.

UPDATE - in the very strong under 19s event, Jamie finished in 33rd place but gained a lot from the superb experience.

Summer of Squash 2024

For six weeks over the Schools summer holidays, the Club was pleased to be part of the Squash Wales initiative, 2024 Summer of Squash.

This national initaitive was designed to encourage young people between the ages of 6 and 12 years to keep active during the holiday period by trying squash. Learning new skills, meet new friends and, we hope, they may wish to continue their development at the Squash Club !

With help and guidance from our Club coaches, the sessions took place each Wednesday morning from 24th July through to 28th August.

USA visitors play at Club

On 26 July, the Squash Club hosted a match with junior players from Shipley School, Pennsylania, who were touring the UK with their coach Chris Lengthorn.

A Wrexham select team, comprised - Sonny Kaye, Lewis Davies, Erin Lauder, Leon Lauder plus Erin & Leons' father Ben (who played as we were short of one player on the day).

All matches were keenley contested, especially Erin's match against Kate Ulrich losing 3-1 having been 8-0 up in the 4th. Lewis and Sonny played very well but were beaten by two quality Shipley players. Young Leon, as usual, ran himself into the ground but found it tough against an older player Rishaan Nagar. Finally, Ben managed to pull one back against Ben Riggio, in a very entertaining match.

This was a great experience for the Wrexham team; they played a team who were impeccably behaved on and off court, playing some quality squash. Pizza's and drinks went down well to complete the evening.

Match v. USA visitors

Tom excels at Wolverhampton

Congratulations to Tom Willis who was Runner-up place at the 2024 Wolverhampton Junior Open.

Tom is Runner-Up in Wolverhampton.

Heavy snow halts the Academy

December 2024

Manchester Junior Open

We wished the best of luck to all those juniors from the Academy Squad who were due to take part in the Manchester Junior Open at three Clubs across the City, over the weekend, 6-8 December. This was a prestigious Gold Event by England Squash.

UPDATE - Congratulations to Academy member, Erin Lauder on her 4th Place in the Girls Under 17 Event.

Get well soon, Will

One of junior members, Will Dean has had an awful 2024 with injury, unable to enjoy his favourite sports - Squash and Rugby.

It started with an injury earlier in the year and then again, in late Summer, a leg injury stopped play of all sports for three months.

Feeling his leg was much better and wanting to start again Will ventured onto the rugby playing field again but, during a ruck, he did unfortunately suffer a fracture to the humerous in his upper left arm. Now wearing an arm immobilising brace, he will have this between 6 to 8 weeks.

What a massive frustration this must be for a keen young person like Will and do hope he gets well soon; we look forward to seeing you back on court, hopefully in the Spring 2025.

Get well soon Will

Final coaching sessions in 2024

The final Club Juniors and Academy Squad (North) sessions of 2024 took place during the week commencing 16th December.

On behalf of all Coaches, we hope that you enjoy Christmas and we would like to see everyone back on court, as keen as ever, in 2025.

Leon siezes the opportunity

Academy player Leon Lauder took the opportunity to get on court with World Ranked No.6 Joel Makin on 17 December.

Leon, age 12, played a game with Joel following the Wrexham First Team match against Warrington. It was brilliant to see this top professional player take time with an outstanding young junior.

If you don't ask ...

Chance of National selection

Best of luck to three of our Academy North players who had individual sessions with Squash Wales National Junior Coach, Greg Tippings at the Club on 23 December.

The hour-long sessions were to "test and assess" all three - Ethan Willis, Erin and Leon Lauder, plus Jamie Silvester on suitability for possible selection to play for Wales - a huge achievement if they were to be successful.
